6 Nations: Then and Now

Other than the Rugby World Cup, there is another inter-country tournament that most rugby fans are looking forward to. This is no other than the 6 Nations Championship! If you are planning to go and watch the 6 Nations Championship games, it is advisable that you have an idea about its long historical rugby relationship starting in Britain.

From the year 1883 to 1909, it was initially a tournament among four countries which are Wales, Ireland, Scotland and England. It is called as the Home Nations Tournament back then. After 1909, it was then when France joined the competition making it the 5 Nations Championship. This rugby tournament among five countries lasted from 1910 to 1931. In 1931, issues came out about France and it was not allowed to play in the tournament and thus returning to the original Home Nations Tournament.

It was in 1939 when France was invited to rejoin to once again make it the 5 Nations Championship. However, due to the war there was little rugby played until 1946 but the 5 Nations stayed in existence and were played yearly right up until the year 2000. It was also in the same year when Italy was allowed to join making the competition what we call today the 6 Nations Championship.

Rugby is really very popular nowadays to the point that tickets are very often hard to come by these days. The prices of the tickets have also become very costly and expensive making it quite unaffordable for the common people.
