Cheat Sheet for the 6 Nations Championship

As a rugby fan you have probably heard about the European Rugby Championship or 6 Nations Championship. If you are about to embark on a round of 6 Nations holidays, you may want some background before you leave. Here is a breakdown of the main points to get you caught up before you set out on your 6 Nations holidays:

1)      This 6 Nations Championship is widely acknowledged as the premier event in European rugby.

2)      The players do not change – the contest is between Wales, Scotland, Italy, Ireland, France and England. You will be able to enjoy your 6 Nations holidays by following the games of your favorite team or you can simply choose a location that takes your fancy.

3)      Each team plays one match against every other team meaning a total of 5 games each. The winner gets the honor of being the European Champion; the team that comes in last place has the dubious honor of being awarded the wooden spoon.

4)      The teams earn three points for winning a game, one point for drawing a game and no points if they lose a game. The team with the highest number of points at the end of the day wins the championship. Should a tie in points occur the team with the highest number of wins will be judged champion. Should this still not point to a clear winner (This has never happened.) the number of tries will be counted.
5)      Teams take turns to host the games annually. This means that the games this year will be played at a different location next year. If Italy hosts France this year, then France will host Italy next year, and so on. This means that two consecutive 6 Nations holidays will be completely different.

6)      There are a number of inter-nation rivalries and trophies. These can make for very interesting 6 Nations holidays as the teams to put a greater effort into these games.

7)      The Giuseppe Garibaldi Trophy is fought for by France and Italy.

8)      The Calcutta Cup is played for by Scotland and England.

9)      The Centenary Quaich is an interesting match between Scotland and Ireland.

10)   The Brits and the Irish play for the Millennium Trophy.

11)   Should the English, Irish or Scots win each one of its matches, they are awarded the Triple Crown. France and Italy cannot play for this.

That is a bare basics rundown of the facts about what the 6 Nations Championship is all about. Now that you understand better you are all ready to go.
